Maze Walk VR - Virtual Reality Game Puzzle Apps

Developer: MyPad3D
Cost: FREE
Tested with: Niantic Tech NTVR-G04E Virtual Reality Headset
Controller needed: No

What we like: This is a fun game, you walk around trying to find coins and the exit of the maze. You walk in place to move around the maze, you can also bob your head to simulate the movement of walking and there are obstacles that you have to jump in place to get over The frame rate seemed decent and the graphics were good. The mazes are timed so while you may want to look around to check out the area, to do your best you want to complete the mazes quickly.

What we didn’t like: No sound? This seems odd to us but we didn’t have any sound when playing which is unfortunate.  We aren’t sure if this was by design or not but ending up face first into a wall only to turn and being pushed up stairs and face planting another wall is a little unsettling at times (though amusing at the time). The walking, jogging and jumping in-place is a double edge sword. For us this was why we liked it, while other may find this unsettling as the additional movement may make you feel queasy. Finally this is an iOS only game at the time of this review, android and window users will have to wait to see if it hits the other marketplaces.

Overall: This is certainly a VR app that you will want to download and try for yourself.

Cedar Point VR

Developer: Cedar Fair
Cost: FREE
Tested with: Niantic Tech NTVR-G04E Virtual Reality Headset
Controller needed: No

What we like: There are a ton of roller coaster games in the iOS store. We like this one because it does everything pretty well. It is a simple single coaster game, which has real sounds from the coaster and the ambient sounds are realistic, in fact they are probably from the real Cedar Point roller coasters. When this worked for us it felt like being on a roller coaster, the dips and turns made our stomach feel just like it does on the real thing (pretty much anyway).

What we didn’t like: This is a single coaster game, you stare at start and begin the ride – that’s it. Once you have completed the ride you can start over or close the app. We would like to see another coaster or two added to the app.  Some users complain because of blurriness, while others this wasn’t an issue when using the same headset which is a bit odd. The QR codes didn’t seem to make a difference much either. Seems like more of a promotional tool then anything else, but free is free and you get what you pay for here.

Overall: Worth the download because it is free, does a better job then many other virtual reality coaster apps on the market.

Sisters: A VR Ghost Story

Developer: Otherworld Interactive, LLC
Cost: FREE
Tested with: Niantic Tech NTVR-G04E Virtual Reality Headset
Controller needed: No

What we like: To level set expectations here, this isn’t a full game, rather a short story if you will. Actually it is more like a demo of how VR can scare you, while not being overly scary. It is a cool experience for those of you who want to dip your toe into scary apps while not having to dive head first. If you stick with this you find the story to last only a few minutes and then it is over. The graphics are good as well as the frame rate.

What we didn’t like: It is very limited and we use the term story lightly. Since it is free we really cannot beat it up too much but it leaves us wanting more. We had to play it a couple times to catch everything though.

Overall: Worth the download, stick with the story and it will be over before you know it, just know it may leave you wanting more like it did us.
